From October 5 to 10, 2026, Professor WU Yun, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Associate Professor JIANG Mengying, and Assistant Professor LI Jiao visited Australia and New Zealand. The trip focused on academic exchange with local universities and institutions on topics including area studies, translation and international communication, language education, and talent cultivation.

On October 5, the delegation attended the international symposium "Constructing and Communicating Shared Memories of Chinese and Australian Communities" at the University of New South Wales. During the visit, the delegation also exchanged views with Professor Linda Tsung of the University of Sydney and Assistant Professor Benjamin Luke Moorhouse of Hong Kong Baptist University on topics such as international communication, cultural translation, multilingual education, and Indigenous cultural education.

From October 7 to 10, the delegation conducted an academic visit to New Zealand. The first stop was the Asia New Zealand Foundation, where they exchanged views on China-New Zealand relations, New Zealand society's perceptions of Asia and China, China-New Zealand people-to-people exchanges, and area studies. The two sides also discussed expanding academic ties, promoting personnel exchanges, and strengthening cooperation.

The delegation then attended the China-New Zealand Cultural Translation and Communication Research Forum organized by Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. WU Yun discussed Māori cultural translation and the communication of New Zealand's national image; JIANG Mengying analyzed the transmedia communication of Māori culture through the example of the filmWhale Rider; and LI Jiao explored pathways for integrating Māori epistemology into Chinese language education in New Zealand from a translanguaging perspective.

On October 9, the delegation held a thematic discussion with Professor Jason Young, Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre, and Professor Hona Black of the Pacific and Māori Research Centre, among others. The discussion focused on Māori studies, Samoan studies, and Pacific regional studies, as well as specific directions for cross-cultural communication, collaborative education, and joint research. The two sides reached positive consensus on academic mutual visits and collaborative cooperation.

On October 10, the delegation attended a special cooperation meeting at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Attendees included Ms. Djhoanna Lambert, Deputy Director of the Office of Global Engagement and Partnerships; Dr. Talia Crockett, International Adviser in the Research Office; Professor Marco Sonzogni; and Dr. Sadat Muaiava. During the meeting, the two sides signed a project cooperation agreement to jointly advance the project "Interdisciplinary Research and Talent Cultivation in New Zealand and the Wider Pacific Region." According to the plan, the two sides intend to promote the institutionalization of research cooperation and talent cultivation through researcher exchanges, joint postgraduate training, academic seminars and workshops, and joint research and project applications.

This visit to Australia and New Zealand further expanded the School's cooperation network with universities and related institutions in the two countries, laying a solid foundation for deepening research collaboration and joint talent cultivation in area studies, international communication, translation studies, and language education.
