
General Information
The Japanese major of Tongji University started in 1993 and has formed a professional training system with complete degree levels including bachelor, master and doctor. We have excellent faculty members graduated from elite universities like Peking University, Shanghai International Studies University, Tokyo University, Waseda University, Kyushu University, Hokkaido University, Okayama University. 90% of our professional teachers have doctoral degrees or above, and 3 Japanese experts are employed all year round. The department head also serves as a member of the Japanese Sub-committee of College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, the Vice President of Chinese Japanese Teaching Research Association and the President of Shanghai Branch. Young teachers have made outstanding achievements in national teaching competitions, winning the runner-up prize of the Japanese group in the final of the multilingual Teaching Star competition of FLTRP, and the first prize in the final of the CASIO Cup Teaching Basic Skills Competition for young teachers of Japanese major in China, etc.

The Department of Japanese aims to lay a solid foundation for students’ language competence and to enhance their abilities to innovate, coordinate different matters and think critically. With emphasis laid on both curricular study and extra-curricular activities, the department is committed to guiding its students to deepen their understanding in Chinese and Japanese cultures.The department is also dedicated to developing talents with social responsibility.
About the Program
Main Courses:Basic Japanese, Intermediate Japanese, Advanced Japanese, Comprehensive Japanese, Audio-visual Japanese, Japanese Reading and Writing, Japanese Literature History, Japanese Grammar, Japanese Spoken Language, Sino-Japanese Translation Theory and Practice, Sino-Japanese Interpretation Theory and Practice, Japanese Applied Writing, Japanese Culture Study, Japanese Audio-visual News, Business Japanese, Advanced Japanese Interpretation, etc.
Our department is equipped with personalized classrooms for small-class teaching. To nurture our students into high-level talents with compound Japanese abilities, we encourage students to study minor courses such as finance, law, journalism or pursue a second major starting from the second year according to their interests. At the same time, students are also encouraged to apply their knowledge to practice through various activities such as Japanese speech and debate competitions, talent competitions, thesis writing competitions, cultural lectures and so on. After years of efforts, our department has set up a series of featured activities such as international seminars on Japanese education and Japanese studies, Homestay in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture and Japanese college associations.
International Collaborations
The Department of Japanese works with international partners in different ways, including student exchanges, home-stay activities and internship collaborations.
1.The department has set up exchange programs with many renowned Japanese universities such as Osaka University. Students are provided with opportunities and convenience to study abroad.
2.The department cooperates with many Japanese organizations. Over ten students are sent to experience the home-stay in Japan together with teachers.
3.The close collaborations with such companies as Pasona offer students opportunities of practical training in Japanese working environment. Three to four graduates are selected every year to work in Japan, enjoying the same salary and benefits as local staff do.
