Professor Brian MacWhinney is Teresa Heinz Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. He has created TalkBank, an open-access repository for language studies across 14 topics, 40 languages, and thousands of speakers. Three unique features of TalkBank include a standardized transcription format for all corpora, advanced NLP/ASR/ML/AI methods for data analysis, and web-based tools for viewing and annotation. He also developed the Competition Model, an emergentist approach to first and second language learning that explains the formation of language structure over time and through human learning.
