Center for German Studies in Science and Technology

The German Studies Center of Tongji University, established in 2013, a university-aliated research institution, is a center for country and area studies recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education; it has been appointed as a Category I Shanghai University Think Tank. Based on the German Studies Center, the Center for Sino-German People-to-People Exchange was established in 2017. It is also a country and area studies center under the Ministry of Education, aimed at furthering research on and promoting Sino-German people-to-people exchanges. The research team consists of nearly 80 full-time and part-time researchers from both inside and outside Tongji University.

As a new type of university think tank, the German Studies Center of Tongji University is committed to academic research, policy advice, international exchanges, talent training and social services. It focuses on five major research areas: Sino-German and Sino-European political and economic relations, Sino-European “Belt and Road” cooperation, Sino-German and Sino-European people-to-people exchanges, regional and urban governance in European countries, and scientific and technological innovation in Europe.

Each year the Center submits more than 50 advisory reports to decision-makers. Its people publish more than 60 signed articles in domestic and overseas mainstream media each year and are frequently interviewed by national and international media. The Center organizes more than 30 domestic academic forums, seminars and lectures each year and regularly holds international conferences jointly with German and European university research institutions and think tanks. It actively engages in a wide-ranging cooperation with foreign think tanks, university research institutions and foundations.
